2020 Thus Far

We're halfway through 2020. Oh boy does the year go by really fast.

I've hardly had time to process what was happening. There's a lot of disappointment career-wise this year, many things didn't go like it was supposed to. But what am I talking about, some people around the world are starving from the lockdown so who am I to complain.

When things get tough, all you have to do is keep swimming. (Dory's voice appearing in my head)

I'm doing something new this year, which is quite exciting.

All your life, you've thought of yourself as one thing but I'm good at proving people wrong. I had been laughed at in the past for my presentations because I FREEZE. That's what I do during presentations. Literally.

So when the agency bosses invited me to share my story with new recruits, I said yes and tried to dissociate myself from the past. And I'm happy to have shared my story twice this year and one time via zoom.

It might not be a big deal to other people but it definitely is a challenge for me.

I've also started a youtube channel as a marketing avenue for my real estate work. Finally took the plunge. We'll see where does this go.

2020.. to the year of challenge, pivot and growth. Half way there!

Mental Health Well-being

I blogged about starting to exercise before. By now, I've made it a commitment to do it every single day except the weekend. The things that it does for my overall well-being is just short of amazing.

I don't know how to NOT make this sound like an advert but gosh. I just needed to say something somewhere. When I say exercise, it's actually short 10-20 mins bursts of HIIT. So it's quick, intense but so so effective.

So my morning routine goes like this:-

6.45/7am - Wake up, gets kids ready for kindy & daycare, breakfast
7.15am - Hubs send oldest to kindy & goes to work
8.30am - Send the toddlers to daycare
9am - Reach home, vacuum the house, feed cat, water plants, feed fish & tiny home touch ups
9.30am - Start HIIT. I LOVE Pamela Reif's
10am - Short shower
10.15am - Start work

I've been doing it consistently almost everyday since early of the year. I don't even think about my weight anymore because doing this, you get toned up so you don't really care anymore. Most days, I work on abs because hello three kids really mess up your middle! But yeah omg if you work on it everyday, you start seeing the muscles toning up and you start losing anything extra.

Plus it's so motivating when you start seeing some parts shrinking and lifted!

It sounds so simple, I started with 10 mins only, but the key word is EVERYDAY. Well, weekends for me is impossible because kids climb on me when I'm planking, so no thank you.

On the days that laziness start creeping in, I quickly remind myself that I have this amazing time in the world that I didn't have just one year ago. If I'm not using this time to get in shape, then what useless piece of meat am I? I choose to work flexible hours so I get to do things I can't normally do if I work 9-5. So I do have lazy days but I'm happy to say to I've been fairly consistent.

What's the aftermath besides feeling fit? Being in my line of work, you tend to get more rejections than yesses, so being fit also helps me feel a lot more positive. You also get less tired and more energetic. You sleep well.

I don't know if this is a plus, because you have to spend money (!) but I've swung from S size to M size but now definitely back to true S size.. so alot of my M sized clothes are baggy on my frame now.

So there you have it.. some of my friends have commented that I looked the same from uni days, but it isn't true because if you've gone through pregnancy, giving birth and nursing (x3) you are definitely NOT the same. It's a conscious effort to keep fit and to control eating habits. But I'll share that next time.

Ramadhan & Third Trimester

I won’t be telling the truth if I said that Ramadhan this time around is not challenging. I’ve started to pray sitting down, and so far I’ve never missed a sahur. About eating habits, I’m used to eating often and I always always have a snack in my car and my handbag. And I usually bring a bottle of water with me everywhere I go, even in my bedroom at night. So fasting is a huge change for me.

For the first 2 days, I try to take it easy by just doing online work for De’ Bams. Physical activities make me soo tired nowadays. Even if I attempt to run an errand for a few hours outside, I’ll come back home as flat as a pancake.

Yesterday, I took an Arab family to view our shortstay apartment around 3pm. They’re looking to rent for a whole month. Normally, I don’t do viewings, unless they wanna stay 2 weeks or more. That morning, I did some errands for a few hours and got home around 12pm. Basically, I was already as flat as a pancake but I had to leave again at 2pm.

So when I arrived at the short stay some 15km away, I was expecting them to arrive on time but of course, keep in mind Murphy’s Law… when something bad can happen, it will happen… their Uber driver cancelled their request, so they had to wait for another taxi to get to my place. They arrived around 3.45pm… I had to tell myself over and over ‘PATIENCE’! At that time, my head was spinning and I was really feeling dehydrated. Travelling outside at 2 in the afternoon is no joke.. Temperature was a high 37C and you could feel the heat above your head.

The heat.. the fasting and carrying a pineapple sized human in your tummy is a bit too much for me to handle, I’ll admit. Thankfully, the viewing went smoothly when they arrived. And they confirmed the stay with us. Alhamdulillah. I love long term stays for one reason: I don’t have to clean up the apartment as often.

Hubs handles the reservations, so I’ve requested him to only accept long term stays in the next few months. I definitely want my maternity leave! That’s the downside of being self-employed. There’s no such thing as an extended leave. Taking a leave is a big effort and I won’t be staying at home for 43 days just taking care of the newborn. I’ll also have to do online work, paperwork, scheduling, delegating tasks to other people.. To top it off, there’s Naila.

Yeah.

My Arab guest who has 5 kids (aged 17 to 16 months! GASP!) wished me good luck with the new baby. She asked me whether I’m planning to have another one? Bwahahahhaha… My answer was I’m taking a looong break from baby making after this one!

On another note, I would like to wish Ramadhan Mubarak to all Muslims out there. May your Ramadhan be filled with mercy & forgiveness.

B is for Bring It On, but Be Kind

Happy 2016 all. It’s another new year! Trumpets. Fireworks! Scratch that. Had enough of that.
I’ve kinda missed blogging. Blogging makes me think of stuff I don’t usually think about sometimes! Sometimes I’ve got so much to say but when looking at a blank white page, it gets intimidating. So I stop. Usually I go get something to eat. Haha.

Anyways, for me personally 2015 might’ve been the hardest year in my whole adult life. The economy took a hit last year to put it simply, and the family finance is forced to take a squeeze. I didn’t get to cross a few things on my 2015 goals. It stared at me with unrelenting eyes on the 31st Dec. Makes me a bit sad. But I’ve moved on.

I’ve been a work at home mom for 2 years now, before that a work at home housewife. Just to be clear I run a few small businesses. To be clear--micro businesses. And it’s not easy seeing other people doing small businesses making it big and sounding like they’ve never failed. I guess you’ve got social media to thank for.

I don’t think anyone in the world would feel happy seeing other people having the things that you want on a daily basis. And for that reason, I don’t think successful people actually spend any time at all on social media EXCEPT to post their own stuff. So. That’s my personal resolution this year: no moping on social media EXCEPT to spread some love. Except during weekends. Fair enough?

Speaking of weekends, I’m also putting it in my resolution to dedicate the weekend morning to recreational activities. So far we’re doing good on that. Even Naila my two year old is on board. Yesterday before drifting off to sleep, she actually mumbled, “ride bicycle at the pork.” Pork is park. We’ve been going to the park every single weekend to make our rounds and sometimes we ride bikes. Naila loves it!

Thank you god for the small pleasures in life.

I have a feeling 2016 isn’t exactly going to be a walk in the park. In fact it’s the year of tough decisions, and much adjustment. I feel like I took a beating in 2015. Something like the school of hard knocked life. If one day I look back, and can begin to think that last year was a little funny and bittersweet, I might tell you a long story about it. But for now, the wounds are still fresh. I’m still bleeding.

Please be kind 2016.

Turning 2

So last week, I took out the old birthday banner. I said, “happy birthday Naila!!!!” Now she thinks happy birthday means the stinkin ol’ banner!

IMG_2498

So far we’ve celebrated with 2 birthday cakes at two different locations. All before her birthday. I’m expecting a few more cakes in the next couple of days.

mommy n naila

Apologies for the messy room.

I can’t believe my little baby is now 2 years old! She loves to jump and dance. Sometimes she says the most surprising things. The other day she bumped into me, she said, “sorry mommy.” And she claims everything she holds is “Naila’s”. She’s also a lot nicer to Chanel. Such a big girl already.

Then you know when your baby turns 2, people start asking about when is the next baby coming. I guess we’ll just wait and see for now. Naila is old enough, and she would really appreciate a sibling. So yeah, who knows? Please doa for me!

naila darling

Officially two!

28

All this while, I thought being 18 was being an adult. You go off to college, get your first whiff of freedom. Then I get to 19, 20, 21, 22, 23. The years just blur out into one long fun university period.

I started working and got married upon entering 24 years old. We had fun, like real fun for one year. Travelling, date nights, dreams. Oh the dreams.

We decided to be parents when I was 25, I gave birth at 26.

Why do I tell the story of my 20s in family terms? I don’t know. Some people are defined by their career. Some by their travel destinations. Some by how many houses. I might have a little bit here and there. But these are nothing without my family.

So I guess my family defines me.

Being 28, I hope I’m wiser. I feel like I’ve taken quite a few of nature’s ‘hard-knocked’ life courses. But despite that I’m still smiling, still standing.

28, please be nice to me!!

Ramadan Kareem

IMG_7545

السلام عليكم

I’ve missed blogging so much!!!! One day, I opened up my blog thinking it’s only been 2-3 months since I last posted. Behold! It’s almost one year! What??!! My last post was when Naila turned one, and she’ll be two in 4 months. Sobs. Time does go by very fast.

Last year around this time I remember having a hard time fasting and the fasting months didn’t feel like one because I was so exhausted taking care of a 7 month old and balancing my workload at the same time. God is so great, this year alhamdulillah there are lots of changes, particularly since the baby is all grown up and I finally got domestic help.

I just wanna say, that we will always be bombarded with problems of the world. Keep your head high, brave it and pray a lot. On those days that feels bleak, just sit in a corner and pray. My favorite surah to ponder is ad-dhuha and al-insyirah that I go back to over and over again when everything feels too much. You can ask anything from God, don’t be shy and don’t feel like you don’t deserve it.

I’ve got so much to share!! (Don’t we all?) But I don’t wanna blab here yet. Wait for my next post!

Take care wonderful people.

Whirlwind 2013

Salam everyone!

Thinking back the year 2013 is such a roller coaster. In the beginning of the year, me and hubs sat down with Chanel (no baby yet!) and wrote down what we wanted for the year. I remember hubs saying ‘we can’t put having a baby as a goal, because babies are a gift.’ I guess God thinks we’re ready because in February, I conceived.

My pregnancy looked very easy, I was active throughout all 10 months (gasp) and I think it gave my husband a false impression on how difficult pregnancies actually are. However despite having a relatively easy pregnancy, I had a challenging time managing my other responsibilities.. which required me to drive a lot, walk a lot, and meet a lot of people. I remember my baby kicking hard when I was driving at 8-9 months. I don’t think I ever sat still my whole pregnancy!

Thinking back, because of my condition and my hectic work, me and hubs travel less this year. However, we still managed to make that one week getaway to Langkawi in January and Cameron Highlands in March.

I knew that for every hard work, and the bun baking in the oven will be unveiled towards the end of the year. In October, 2 weeks after I celebrated my birthday, and after many guesses from everyone, baby Naila decided to pop out! And my husband was offshore for a good 3 weeks! And alhamdulillah my business was running well with minimal supervision.

Towards the end of the year, I feel very humbled and thankful. Having a baby makes me humbled. Makes me value time more. Makes me appreciate women more, especially my mom and my grandmas. I am thankful for having an easy pregnancy, a memorable birthing experince, a healthy baby and a great support system during my berpantang recovery period, and people to care for baby while I needed to get work done.

I don’t know what else to say… I’m just in that thankful mode, ya know, great things are still happening—ongoing—the love hormones are still flooding my system. So yeah, I can’t wait for another great year! Maybe more travelling this time? Maybe to visit baitullah? Who knows?

Have a great year ahead!

My Labor Story Part 1

NUR ADILA_1

Salam guys,

I just wanted to share my partial gentle and natural birth. I never expected to go this way, I was PRO-epidural all the way until I stumbled across ‘gentle birthing’ during my 36th week of pregnancy. I never went to any prenatal class or any birthing class but I did plenty of research before deciding to submit my birth plan to the doctor. I changed doctors so many times, but only because I found myself in certain situations, price vs treatment factor (we’re fully paying patients because our insurance does not cover maternity at all), and also taking into account doctor’s willingness to follow my plan.

My birth plan:

birth plan

I would like to point out that some things in the list are actually against some doctor’s or even hospital policy, so you can imagine how I had to look for the right doctor. Lucky me, I found my perfect doctor after switching 3 times and the hospital is just 5 minutes drive away from my parent’s :)

So here’s my story :)

I went over my due date, despite people’s positive assurance that I’ll go into labor early because this is ‘my first child’. The dates doesn’t really matter to me, if not for the fact that my husband has to leave for his offshore assignment on the 16th October. My due date was the 19th. So you can imagine how sad I was when my husband left… My doctor said she’ll allow my pregnancy to go until 41 weeks MAX, after that we’ll have to schedule for inducement. At that point, I thought, well… no husband, no natural birth. I felt hopeless and depressed.

I wallowed for a while, then get on with my life, still drove, did my work.

So after my husband left, I felt more strongly about letting my labor start spontaneously. My husband has gone anyway, why should I cave to doctor’s ‘inducement threats’. (OK my doctor is actually the bomb, she supports natural labor, found her name on a natural birth forum)  I learned so much about benefits of a spontaneous labor and the scary bits about inducement. I wanted to cry at the thought of a c-section. I did everything I knew about ‘natural inducers’. Pineapples, long walks, squats, eating dates and others… you name it. My doctor reminded me to do zikr a lot and talk to the baby.

Honestly I can’t tell you what works, because I did everything at the same time. Maybe that’s key, that’s what started the labor. Two days before my labor, I went to the park with my brother at 8 am and walked for about an hour. Someone should’ve pointed out that there’s a HUGE difference between walking in the mall and walking in the park. I could walk 4 hours in the mall but not feel tired. Walking in the park is a different story. You don’t stop to eat, or rest, or sit.

Anyway after the walk, I felt some pain in the abdomen. Well turns out it was nothing. Or maybe it was something…

Because two days later, I woke up in the middle of night feeling light cramps, the annoying type you’d get during a period. I thought.. no way.. this couldn’t be it, it’s just practice contractions. I sat up, and felt something gush. I checked and based on a thousand hours of looking up ‘labor signs’ on the internet, I was pretty sure that I was in early labor. At that point, my waters were leaking and I had a show.

I was like, YESSSSSSSS let’s get the show started!!

I started timing my annoying light cramps. I couldn’t believe it was rhythmic! Coming every 20 minutes. I stayed up feeling ecstatic until 4 am, but because it wasn’t strong I went back to sleep.

I woke up for Subuh, excitedly texting my hubby it’s ganna be today! Then I waited until 8.30am to tell mom. Mom was excited but we decided to wait until my contractions got stronger. At 9.00am my contractions did get stronger, to the extent that I couldn’t speak during one. I did a lot of research beforehand about surge breathing and took deep long breaths during a contraction. That technique helped a lot in managing the pain. My mom notified my MIL, and when she appeared at my front door at 11am, the contractions tapered off.

For real peoples.

So we ate and talked like any normal day, not in early labor at all. Around 12.30pm, the contractions came back with a vengeance. I excused myself from the dining table and sat near the tv. I told both moms that the contractions are strong and 14 minutes apart. My doctor and I agreed that I would labor at home until the contractions are 10 minutes apart. I remember watching 6 days and 7 nights while feeling the contractions come and go. At the same time I walked back and forth in front of the tv. Walking actually helped tone down the pain intensity.

Also worth mentioning is that around 3pm, I started feeling huge pressure in my back. Well well turns out I was experiencing the dreaded back labor. There’s nothing much I could do about it, but I remember that leaning forward and pressing into my back provided some relief.

Around 4pm-ish, I did my Asar prayers. Shortly after that, the contractions picked up in pace and strength. I was still doing the breathing techniques, but find it harder to manage. It was then that I started feeling a little bit panicked and out of control. I had my hospital bag ready and waited for my mom downstairs. By then my contractions suddenly jumped to 4 minutes apart, lasting about 40 seconds each.

 photo

Mom drove me to the hospital around 5-ish. I was really concentrating on my breathing because that is KEY in managing the pain and how I lasted that long. I checked in via emergency and was wheeled straight to the labor room.

All the while I was like, I can’t believe this is happening!! I brought my headset, my phone, phone charger, a bottle full of water, a quarter bottle of zam zam water (spilled in the car nooooooooo) and of course my hospital bag. Felt like I was prepping for battle. Because my husband wasn’t around, they allowed my mom to be with me during labor.

The doctor came in, had me assessed. I was 7cm dilated!! Can’t believe I was so close!!

I texted my husband the update, feeling ecstatic. So far, the labor has been natural all the way and I thought well, it isn’t so bad. It’s been 9 hours of steady contractions but I‘ve eaten, I’ve prayed, and I could still walk around. I even slotted in a movie session in the afternoon and had a catching up sesh with MIL! Lol. I also felt baby actively kicking since morning. I can definitely do this. Little did I know that the drama was just about to begin.

Baby is waking up! I’ll continue in part 2!

PART 2 Here!

Love!

Happy happy

jar of gardenia soaps

Can’t believe its end of the year already!! Time flies sooo fast.

I read a wonderful suggestion somewhere the other day. Get an empty jar, then for every happy momentous moment, write a note about it and keep it the jar! Let the notes accumulate for one year, then read it at the end of the year!

There’s so many things that gets us down and not much to remind us what’s good in life. This is just one way to literally count your blessings so I’m definitely going to try it :)

Anyways happy new Gregorian calendar year! =P

Overdue Eid Post

So I know that this is the last week of Eid, but people say better late than never!

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a blessed Eid Mubarak and would like to apologize for any unbecoming in the past.

The reason why I was out cold was because my laptop crashed on the final week of Ramadhan and never recovered until a week ago. It was quite troublesome really. Though Eid can be partly blamed for the delayed repair.

Eid this year is different, with the hubs and new family. You wouldn’t think that it has been only two weeks, judging by amount of things that have changed in me & hubs’ lives. Nothing too drastic on my part, but hubs started his job in a new company and so far things are looking up.

Plus, a fortnight ago, we went on a five-day trip to the east coast Island of Lang Tengah. The trip was super fun. We planned it months ago. Well, actually it’s either that or Bangkok, with Lang Tengah being the backup. One hell of a backup it was! I’ll let ya’ll know ‘bout it later.

Hope your Eid was good and blessed with plenty of barakah, love and food!

Till then, ciao!

Fortunate

In this life there’s always somebody better than you. Their job, their clothes, their cars, and their life. When you start to feel a little bit better because of your career change, for example, somebody else gets a raise.

Or when you’re planning to go Umrah, somebody else beats you to it by two years.

It’s never going to be enough isn’t it?

So when I saw the state that some kids grow up in, I felt humble. Because they’re living on so little, yet they’re so happy.

IMG_2925

Yesterday I was fortunate to have visited Madrasah Hashimiah—the boarding school for Myanmar muslims and Rohingya refugees.

The state that they’re in… I’m living like Queen Elizabeth compared to them. To them, sleeping on comforters and eating capattis are a luxury.

Imagine not being able to go to school or to work because of the refugee status. A refugee basically means that they are stateless. Being chased around like slaughtered sheep. They’re chased out of their country and our country doesn’t recognize them as citizens.

That’s not the worst part. Having no identification means that they’re also NOT eligible to receive zakat nor money from any government agencies. UNHCR can only help so much by giving the temporary ‘refugee’ status cards.

They are mainly funded through the founder’s own sweat. He teaches quran recitation classes to pay for most of the school’s expenses. ok masyaallah. The rest is funded by caring individuals. Even so, most of the time they lack funds to properly manage the school/orphanage.

It’s clear that they’ve been through worse. One kid relayed to me that they paid a lot to flee their country and that they hid in car bonnets at immigration borders. Most of them have similar stories. They can’t go home.

Do you know what made me feel ashamed though? They are happy and joyous. Well, at least they seem to be, most of the time, more than me.

The reason why I’m writing about this orphanage is not to highlight what I did, but rather for us to reflect on our lives and objectives. It’s true that life is short. Fact is, life is merely but a test. Money should not make us happy, nor should it make us sad. Money does not dictate us. We should use the money to make a difference!

So what will guarantee us happiness? Two words really – good deeds.

P/S: For more information on Madrasah Hashimiah, please visit their blog or call Muslim Aid office 03-22881996 (attn:En Muhammad). Donations to the orphanage can be tax exempted.

P/P/S: A huge thanks to En Muhammad of Muslim Aid for answering all our questions and giving us a tour of the kids’ humble abode. He is clearly concerned about the orphans’ wellbeing.

Ramadan Is Here

ramadan mubarak
"Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may attain taqwaa." [2:183]

Here we are again, no words to describe how I feel about this special month.

I looOOoove Ramadan. No, I’m not talking about food. On the contrary.

Take advantage of this month. Let’s solat, fast, read a lot of Quran and do charity as much as we can.

Will we be the ones who jump at the biggest opportunity for afterlife or will we be pre-occupied with our present life that we forget about our next?

Wallahualam.

Things I’m Thankful For

IMG_2758

Quick updates. Last two weeks, I went to Maher Zain’s concert in Stadium Merdeka with my husband and brother. It was the shiz. You know? Awesome.

In husband’s own words, “ World class performer, an artist.” So yeah it was really great, really.

One thing is, Maher Zain is a really good entertainer. And I don’t feel guilty for shouting and screaming at a concert because, how can you feel guilty when you’re shouting Barakallah! Alhamdulillah! Allahuakhbar! Like, no brainer I can do this all night.

Me and my brothers went to his concert last year as well, but I gotta hand it to Maher and his team because this year’s concert is 100 times better than last year. Better show, better set-up, better flow, better performances. I’d call it a technical success. I won’t hesitate to buy the tickets to his show again and again.

The only con is that we couldn’t take photos! Argh!

On the same weekend, my bestie since school, Sakinah got engaged! Wee!

411105_10151182056268508_1645129088_o

Sakinah accompanied me to the wedding course last year in July and now she’s getting married! I was so excited when I got the news from her.

I got to play a special part in the day, which is the makeup artist! This is actually the second time that I’ve ever made up my friends for their big day. I was going for natural with flushed cheeks. Plus Sakinah has niceee skin, so I didn’t wanna ruin it by piling up the makeup on her.

Sakinah and her sister are taken, but she’s got 3 more sisters so mothers may think of booking for their sons from now. Ok just kidding. *Sakinah please don’t kill me*

I’m thankful for my family, my friends, and the time that I have.
That’s all for updates this time. Much love!

So when it’s all set and done, all that’s left is the memory. What are weddings without their photographers?

adilahammarsanding_raw0394

Pictures are extremely important to nostalgic me. I have 7 diaries and 320 gb worth of personal pictures. I keep movie tickets and receipts. I don’t let my family members touch my room even though I’ve moved out. I kept magazines since 1999. My husband calls me a hoarder, but that’s just serious accusation.

adilahammarsanding_raw0462

I was in the midst of short listing my photographers. It was between one really famous photographer (Udey Ismail), and another less famous (Nonofara, photolicious) which were respectively good. I also liked Saiful Nang, but I’d rather buy a superbike with the money. I actually met up and discussed terms and vision with these people and almost put down the deposit.

One day my brother suggested that I should take a look at his friend’s work. Me being me, didn’t pay any mind until he shoved the laptop under my nose with his friend’s website on screen.

I was blown away. Please note that this isn’t an exaggeration. His pictures were personal, beautifully candid, tasteful, and full of emotion.
