Dreams and then some

It's like 11.54pm at the moment. Lately, I've been sleeping late and waking up with panda eyes which is not good for Instagram close-ups. Yup, I'm thinking about stuff like that now. What a far cry from the days of sarong the whole day.

I guess life changes in a split second. You have to savour every moment.

You also have to make firm decisions that would propel you into a new life. Five years later, you'll thank the day you decided to make exercise part of your morning routine. You'll thank the day you pick up the camera and start sharing on youtube. You'll thank the day you started consciously avoiding things with an extensive carbon footprint. You'll thank the day you tentatively invested a little amount in the stock market.

If you have dreams, it's easy to take the next step that would support it. It's never comfortable but it will feel purposeful and necessary.

When I started out on social media, I didn't know which language to write in. I felt comfortable expressing myself in english but I'm aware that I would alienate the people who needed the knowledge the most. So I decided to brush up on my awkward bahasa and punch through. OK PUN. As they say. It might still be awkward but who cares. The important thing is that I'm conveying my message clearly.

I also wished that I could hide behind words and continue blogging forever. But if we don't get out of our comfort zone to do what is required, others will and then take away our dreams too.

I look at Bill & Melinda Gates with their philanthropic work. Simply inspiring. I could listen to him talk about eradicating Ebola & infectious diseases all day. He changed the world via tech and philanthropy. And managing to be humble.

If there's something we should be good at, it should be something we're already doing. I'm hoping that one day, my kids will say "mommy & daddy" as their inspiration.

2020 Thus Far

We're halfway through 2020. Oh boy does the year go by really fast.

I've hardly had time to process what was happening. There's a lot of disappointment career-wise this year, many things didn't go like it was supposed to. But what am I talking about, some people around the world are starving from the lockdown so who am I to complain.

When things get tough, all you have to do is keep swimming. (Dory's voice appearing in my head)

I'm doing something new this year, which is quite exciting.

All your life, you've thought of yourself as one thing but I'm good at proving people wrong. I had been laughed at in the past for my presentations because I FREEZE. That's what I do during presentations. Literally.

So when the agency bosses invited me to share my story with new recruits, I said yes and tried to dissociate myself from the past. And I'm happy to have shared my story twice this year and one time via zoom.

It might not be a big deal to other people but it definitely is a challenge for me.

I've also started a youtube channel as a marketing avenue for my real estate work. Finally took the plunge. We'll see where does this go.

2020.. to the year of challenge, pivot and growth. Half way there!

Mental Health Well-being

I blogged about starting to exercise before. By now, I've made it a commitment to do it every single day except the weekend. The things that it does for my overall well-being is just short of amazing.

I don't know how to NOT make this sound like an advert but gosh. I just needed to say something somewhere. When I say exercise, it's actually short 10-20 mins bursts of HIIT. So it's quick, intense but so so effective.

So my morning routine goes like this:-

6.45/7am - Wake up, gets kids ready for kindy & daycare, breakfast
7.15am - Hubs send oldest to kindy & goes to work
8.30am - Send the toddlers to daycare
9am - Reach home, vacuum the house, feed cat, water plants, feed fish & tiny home touch ups
9.30am - Start HIIT. I LOVE Pamela Reif's
10am - Short shower
10.15am - Start work

I've been doing it consistently almost everyday since early of the year. I don't even think about my weight anymore because doing this, you get toned up so you don't really care anymore. Most days, I work on abs because hello three kids really mess up your middle! But yeah omg if you work on it everyday, you start seeing the muscles toning up and you start losing anything extra.

Plus it's so motivating when you start seeing some parts shrinking and lifted!

It sounds so simple, I started with 10 mins only, but the key word is EVERYDAY. Well, weekends for me is impossible because kids climb on me when I'm planking, so no thank you.

On the days that laziness start creeping in, I quickly remind myself that I have this amazing time in the world that I didn't have just one year ago. If I'm not using this time to get in shape, then what useless piece of meat am I? I choose to work flexible hours so I get to do things I can't normally do if I work 9-5. So I do have lazy days but I'm happy to say to I've been fairly consistent.

What's the aftermath besides feeling fit? Being in my line of work, you tend to get more rejections than yesses, so being fit also helps me feel a lot more positive. You also get less tired and more energetic. You sleep well.

I don't know if this is a plus, because you have to spend money (!) but I've swung from S size to M size but now definitely back to true S size.. so alot of my M sized clothes are baggy on my frame now.

So there you have it.. some of my friends have commented that I looked the same from uni days, but it isn't true because if you've gone through pregnancy, giving birth and nursing (x3) you are definitely NOT the same. It's a conscious effort to keep fit and to control eating habits. But I'll share that next time.

Wonder in These Years

IMG_9221

We’re starting to settle into a normal routine. We get up around 6.30-7am. Everybody has breakfast, shower. Hubs leave around 7.30 – 8am. I send Naila to school around 8.30am. I started taking Ibrahim with me lately so after sending Naila, we sometimes walk downstairs at the playground area.

Then I ask my maid, Dewi to play downstairs with Ibrahim. I put baby to sleep. I’m starting to exercise a bit but I don’t have a fixed routine yet. I start doing work on the laptop. Follow ups, putting up ads, attending to enquiries. On days that I have to go out, I’ll maneuver around that timing.

Sometimes I leave Naila in school. I try not to leave all 3 kids with my maid for more than 2 hours. Sometimes I’ll take one of the babies with me for viewings or meetings or inspections. If I plan to leave the baby at home, I’ll pump milk in the morning. I don’t collect frozen expressed milk, only a few bags in the freezer for emergency too long outings. So far I haven’t used them for baby.

I usually pick up Naila at 12pm. The kids nap in the afternoon except for Naila who usually does her colouring/play doll house/lego/sticker book or ipad time. Afternoons are usually varied depends on whether I leave house or not that day.

By 4pm I usually wrap up my laptop time though I still answer calls or messages. I take them down to the playground while my maid cooks. 6-6.30pm we have dinner. Bath time. Story time. Mengamuk time. If I’m not too tired we do our sleeping time routine.. play shadows, read books or telling stories with a flashlight in the dark. Actually this is only possible if the baby is asleep or he’s surprisingly quiet. By 8.30pm, lights off.

The kids will usually be asleep by 9pm. If I don’t accidently fall asleep as well, I’ll wake up to update my listings, make a to do list for tomorrow. Then if it’s still early, I watch a movie or tv series. I gotta be honest. I love my nights. I wouldn’t be able to survive without my nights!

The days are long, but the years are short.

I still remember the days with Naila alone, and thinking “this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done”. Obviously I haven’t met Ibrahim and Hassan yet at that point! Honestly if I see other moms out there, I’ll be like “how the heck does she manage?” I sometimes ask myself the same question but the answer is that.. you just do.

It’s one day at a time.. Suddenly everybody is grown up. Naila is turning 4. Ibrahim has started walking. Hassan has started smiling. 2 months ago Hassan was still a bun in the oven!

I will never forget these wonderful years. Tiring, but wonderful.

Ramadhan & Third Trimester

I won’t be telling the truth if I said that Ramadhan this time around is not challenging. I’ve started to pray sitting down, and so far I’ve never missed a sahur. About eating habits, I’m used to eating often and I always always have a snack in my car and my handbag. And I usually bring a bottle of water with me everywhere I go, even in my bedroom at night. So fasting is a huge change for me.

For the first 2 days, I try to take it easy by just doing online work for De’ Bams. Physical activities make me soo tired nowadays. Even if I attempt to run an errand for a few hours outside, I’ll come back home as flat as a pancake.

Yesterday, I took an Arab family to view our shortstay apartment around 3pm. They’re looking to rent for a whole month. Normally, I don’t do viewings, unless they wanna stay 2 weeks or more. That morning, I did some errands for a few hours and got home around 12pm. Basically, I was already as flat as a pancake but I had to leave again at 2pm.

So when I arrived at the short stay some 15km away, I was expecting them to arrive on time but of course, keep in mind Murphy’s Law… when something bad can happen, it will happen… their Uber driver cancelled their request, so they had to wait for another taxi to get to my place. They arrived around 3.45pm… I had to tell myself over and over ‘PATIENCE’! At that time, my head was spinning and I was really feeling dehydrated. Travelling outside at 2 in the afternoon is no joke.. Temperature was a high 37C and you could feel the heat above your head.

The heat.. the fasting and carrying a pineapple sized human in your tummy is a bit too much for me to handle, I’ll admit. Thankfully, the viewing went smoothly when they arrived. And they confirmed the stay with us. Alhamdulillah. I love long term stays for one reason: I don’t have to clean up the apartment as often.

Hubs handles the reservations, so I’ve requested him to only accept long term stays in the next few months. I definitely want my maternity leave! That’s the downside of being self-employed. There’s no such thing as an extended leave. Taking a leave is a big effort and I won’t be staying at home for 43 days just taking care of the newborn. I’ll also have to do online work, paperwork, scheduling, delegating tasks to other people.. To top it off, there’s Naila.

Yeah.

My Arab guest who has 5 kids (aged 17 to 16 months! GASP!) wished me good luck with the new baby. She asked me whether I’m planning to have another one? Bwahahahhaha… My answer was I’m taking a looong break from baby making after this one!

preggers

On another note, I would like to wish Ramadhan Mubarak to all Muslims out there. May your Ramadhan be filled with mercy & forgiveness.

Money Makes The WOrld Go Round

I haven’t been writing for such a long time and I feel so out of tune.

Before I go any further, updates first! My to-do list is a mile long but unfortunately I’m getting better and better at procrastination. When I resigned one month ago (gasp that long already?!) I thought I was going to get lots of things done. I did for awhile, but has anyone ever told you that working alone is hard???? I’m so used to the moral support in the office and how kiasu everyone is at getting things done. It just rubs on you, ya know?

I force myself to stay home and do work but seriously, how can you get things done when you hear Piers Morgan questioning Jimmy Fallon on tv (my mom watches that talk show almost every morning) or Tweet deck chirping a new message? (Follow me on twitter!)

I mean seriously people. Plus when things head south, there’s no one to say, “don’t worry, we’ll solve this together! You’re doing a great job!!!” (Heart my ex boss)

So now I’m trying to be self-employed while waiting to start work at a new company and I just found out that I might start only in August. This is kind of bad but kinda good too, whichever way you look at it. If I can just discipline myself to get work done, bam bam bam then it’s good.

Anyway that’s it for updates. I’ve got other big news as well but that’s in a different post.

On to the title of this post. Do you ever wonder why do you work? Well, obviously it’s because you LOOOVE it, right? And oh yeah, there’s the money that comes with it too. Yea…

justin-bieber31

On my first job, I started off with genuine intentions of gaining experience, but at the sight of the first paycheck, you kind of open the window abit; on the second paycheck, you just throw that intention out the window.

But honestly I don’t want money to rule me, so I decided to spend as little as possible, hence from January-March, besides going to work, I just basically stayed home because I was afraid that I would spend outside –_-

There’s a saying that goes, the secret to having lots of money is by not spending like the rich. Of course people argue that when you’re rich, you can afford to spend like a rich person.

If I had loads of money aka rich, (amount can be subjective)I would probably buy one kick a** bmw 4wheel drive. And I’ll make a house on that awesome plot of land. Maybe another in Queenstown.

Then I will go for valet parking everytime I shop. I will do all of this if I can afford in cash (which means that I must be a gazillionaire). Because there’s another saying that goes, you must not spend what you don’t have. Meaning, no bank overdrafts, no credit, no loans. I don’t think this is meant to work for poor people like me, it’s called wistful thinking for the unemployed.

Having money for me simplifies life, it’s like having a smart tag during the worst traffic jam of life. It’s like having enough money to board the ark when the world is doomed (please watch movie 2012 to understand what I’m saying. As a hint, they charged 1billion euro per head). It’s not about having a walk-in closet just for shoes (It’ll be nice, though). Or being able to flaunt that bright yellow Lamborghini in everyones faces (drool).

I don’t know. Money means lots of things to lots of people. I’d be happy to travel anywhere I wanna go, anytime I want and by any means. Now that is the awesomest.

Catch you guys later. Lots of <3

Wise Words Wednesday

Photobucket

A spin to Wordless Wednesdays ;)

“…people will pay for those who can solve problems, not those who cause them…”

“ It’s important to be friendly, because people tend to help friends, not strangers.”

“ Smile alot.”

“ Say thank you, it doesn’t cost a thing.”

“ Go on, try it. If you don’t, you’ll never know…”

“ Don’t trust people. Ask them as many questions as possible before telling them things about us.”

“ Sometimes, we don’t have to know everything. Just have a feel by starting doing things.”

These words were told by my bosses, colleagues and friends I met through work.

p/s: I know I know, been MIA. Just that so many things are happening. (As if other people aren’t busier than me!) I’m ganna update asap. Take care everyone.

Where To Find Winter Boots?

One fact that I’d just like to share: Playing video games makes you irritable and anti-social. At least for me, because I get that irritated feeling whenever someone calls my name to “help out” or do something.

I don’t always discuss work stuff but yesterday was weird. My work lets me meet a lot of different people. Some hot some not so much. So yesterday after an appointment, my colleague Steve and I stopped by a company’s office and asked if we can talk to the manager.

The lady sitting down by the reception looks 38-ish, with a dazed expression on her face. She said no. Steve continued, anybody else in this office besides you? While pointing into the office and making gestures for emphasis. With so much of a hint of life in her, she shakes her head. So Steve said, can you give me the contact number of the person in charge? She said no. Dazed. Looks down at paper on her table.

Steve tried again, saying, so maybe you can give us some promotional brochures or anything that we can take back? She gave a small nod, woke up and went to the back. Veery slowly. Steve looked at me and was like, “wtf?”

I looked away and pretended to look at the models, all the while laughing my head off inside. My soft toys looked more alive than her! And also a drugged person was 5 times more responsive. Two words, aunty on crack –_-

By the way the main reason I’m writing is because I just realized that its HARD to find winter boots in KL! I’m talking about the 2 inch thick, made for snow ones. I’ve been looking for them everywhere! Where are they?

Long story short, the original plan to Mecca is being cancelled (Saudi’s fault) and we’re replacing it with this. (Can’t really call it replacing because the purpose of going to each is totally different but yeah).

But if any of you are looking for winter boots, you might as well just buy them at wherever you’re going or order online. But that would cost a bomb. So which one? I’m going to say it depends on you really. I’m choosing the latter.

Superstar Party & Scout’s Rule

How do you react when a colleague asks whether you’d like to go to a superstar party in Sunway when you’re on the phone, talking to someone? You nod her off. She took it as a ‘yes’ to her question. That was how my name got reserved for a bling bling party. But of course, I didn’t go.

I don’t have to explain-lah. I don’t party unless it’s with a bunch of close friends, closed venue, closed everything; perhaps with dance mats, twisties, lots of makeup and maybe Paranormal Activity 2.

Anyways I’ve been putting in a piece of clothing into the suitcase every day. Honestly I feel like crying. Have you tried packing for 10 days with the possibility of NOT being able to wash any piece for that duration? Horror I tell you. What’s worse is trying to fit everything into one medium-sized suitcase without tearing it.(I’m so going to make a travel guide once everything gets sorted out.)

The bbs (2 big bosses) have been nothing short of supportive of my holiday. I really try to avoid discussing my holiday with them because it’s like a paradox--- it’s almost like they pay me for going on a holiday when they talk about it. Which makes me feel uncomfortable. But they almost encourage it(??) One has been there, and another one wants to go there. Figures. I work at the wackiest office with the wackiest bosses.

One conversation went like this:

Boss A: so have you packed for the holiday?

me: Yea, but it’s hard to pack for 10 days!

Boss A: well, you know the scout’s rule?

me: Um. No.

Boss A: This is how you pack for 4 days--- you take 2 socks, 2 underwear. You wear one pair a day, next day turn inside out, then turn front to back. That one pair can last 4 days.

me: …gross

Of course he was joking and of course, no way I’m doing that. So much for scout’s rule. –_-

Peace out!

Ramadhan and Working

HIIII! This place is starting to grow cobwebs again. My bad. I never intended to abandon this particular creative outlet but you know, I had to chase little mischievous kittens all week long. You can guess how that feels like at the end of the day. Ok just kidding. I was working. Yep.

I obviously haven’t gotten used to using excess energy after the almost-two-months holiday. And I’m sleeping early like I used to again. About time too, because the eyebags were getting scary.

How’s ramadhan going for you guys? It’s second nature to me by now. The tummy doesn’t hold rock concerts in the afternoon anymore like it did in the beginnning. I don’t feel like buying the whole bazaar ramadhan anymore either. So that’s good.

weird

That’s why I lost weight. Shucks. I tried gaining weight like crazy the past few months. That’s 2 kgs lost. It’s just ridiculous. Preposterous. Bonkers. Don’t be mad at me for saying this, but I envy people who can gain weight and make it stay!

I took weight gain for a while, but that was when I did a lot of swimming. Exercising actually helps me maintain weight. *So go exercise!!!!* Ramadhan is a no-exercise zone for me unfortunately.

You know how people always say to people gaining weight: “Makin sihat nampak”. There’s always a smile on their faces. Try saying the opposite: “You look so thin”. The person saying it gives out a concerned, sympathetic look that makes me feel like the underfed child from Africa.

So then I used to blame stress of studying. Now perhaps I could say, you know, work stress! Wee.

Happy weekend muchacha & muchachos!

And There Was Star Trek

DAILY OMGS

I wonder why some people feel they are fit enough to pass judgments on me when all they did was to look at me for 5 minutes? I was falling asleep in the surau when some makcik got in and said, “tak de keje eh? Masih ada masa nak berehat2.” Mind your own business, woman.

Today at work was pretty eventful. I played a game on Cimbclicks that give Nokia handphones to the top 5 winners. So far I’m ranked 359. Then I went to the bank, it was full, I went back. Me and friends planned to have lunch in McD. It was too hot outside so we cancelled. I went to the canteen twice to buy snacks and drinks. See? Eventful.

CAR

As for updates on my car, I’m happy with it, but I’d be ecstatic if the car doesn’t accelerate like an old lady. Luckily I’ve got heads up before buying the car, so I know.

I still can’t get over how short the car is. The car trunk is non-existent. It’s a blast getting out of tight spots. A little maneuver and I’m out.

HAMSTERS

I’m glad my hamsters aren’t procreating any further. The lengths we go through to make sure of that is almost amazing. 5 cages for 5 hamsters. It’s a zoo I tell ya. Thank god I need to clean only once every fortnight.

STAR TREK

I watched it last Friday. Friday night Friday night. Night of freedom and celebrations. Freaking fantastic. Went into the cinema with 1% knowledge of Star Trek, no expectations and previews nor summary readings beforehand and I was blown away. Suddenly that Sylar guy is hot. And Chekov and James T. Kirk. Suddenly I feel like a Star Trek fan. Suddenly I felt like watching reruns from the 1960s original Star Trek series but of course didn’t.

Star Trek is Ah-May-Zing. Period okay. I watched it twice at the cinema in 3 days okay. Apparently everyone agrees because it’s no 1 in US now?

My Boss My hero

That’s not what I’m going to talk about actually.

I feel compelled to discuss about this particular subject because as interns, me and my friends learn about new rules and regulations every day. For instance, in the company I work for, it’s OK to eat in meetings, be it meetings with low ranked workers (ie, us) or meetings with the big bosses. In fact for every meeting, there are 2 types of kuih, fried noodles, tea & coffee and everyone starts poking their forks in the noodle as soon as the chairman says, “Goodmorning everyone”. By the time one person is in the middle of his presentation, everyone will be passing food around the table.

But enough about food.

Every company has it’s organizational chart. Every procedure, plan, implementation must be run through the people in the chart from the bottom to the top. It goes up, if the upper ranks don’t agree, it’ll go down again, then go up until the higher ranks approve.

Funny thing the other day when a bunch of us went for a walkabout around the plant to observe hick-ups. There was me, 2 other buddies, my boss, and a couple of my boss’s boss. Let’s call my boss, Mr Kool (I’m feeling extremely creative today), my boss’s boss, Mr Pringles and two of my friends Hi & Di. Mr Pringles observed something out of place during the walkabout, turned to Mr Kool and said, “Kool, please take note of that.” In which Mr Kool turned to Hi and said, “Hi, please take a look at that.” I thought Mr Pringles could’ve simply talked to Hi directly since he was right there beside Mr Pringles. But No… he had to get all high and mighty did he…

I’m sure if there was something lower than an intern, Hi would probably turn and pass that down but since we’re at the bottom of the ladder, the implementation rests on our shoulders…

The same goes to scolding a.k.a. ‘Fire’. Big-time boss scolds boss for a hick-up, boss then scolds little boss which then scolds someone lower (temporary? interns?). Behold the schematic diagram of the scolding ranks for easier understanding.

hirarchy

In a company, it goes like that. Big-time bosses don’t go around screaming and throwing books on intern’s heads. In fact, they simply know us as ‘interns’, or the 4 interns or those UTP interns. Even if we screw up, they won’t blame us. They’ll blame boss. Boss will then relay messages to us.

I'm abit awed by this system in the beginning because from where I come from, we can go straight to the big guns. I'm also a little bit surprised to see people exercising big displays of emotions at the workplace. Let's face it, when was the last time we expressed ourselves openly to acquaintances ... perhaps in kindergarten. (my grandma told me that I shouldn't be friends with you because you're not fasting; I don't wanna be your friend because you're fat*cringes*. You get the idea.)

So when you hear stuff like, "That skirt makes you ugly", "I'm not a pleasant person to work with, you should've finish it before I come here!" or "Hoi that's dangerous chemical, why the heck did you move it? Don't be stupid" you'll be like, cool, everyone's dissing.

Lesson today: Don’t skip ranks, or you’ll get derailed. And one more thing, always be prepared for scolding that will blow your stripy socks off.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Side note: I know I said something about taking a hiatus, but suddenly inspiration struck me after witnessing boss scolding little boss. Can't believe an unfortunate event churning an inspiration? Believe it now ;)

I Am a Mediocre Case of 9 to 5

I've been postponing a real entry all this while by putting up stuff like that fun fun commercial, and that video about the non-muslim who wants to wear Hijab. You should watch that. How often does a non-muslim wanna touch a Hijab? Let alone wearing it.

I can't put off writing a real post any longer. I just don't have much to say lately because working keeps me occupied and tired throughout the week. And I feel like a robot. Robots do not think. Robots do work. That's how it is with working. Most of the times anyway. Notice how many times I said work in the above?

Here's how my week goes like:

Wake up at 6.15am. Get ready, skip breakfast and head out to work. Stuck in traffic jam and sing Let's Dance super loud. Do work. Do work. Ladidadida. Lunch and gossip. Then back to work. Surf the net when there's no work. Get excited over Superbid Wednesday and cast worrying glances at the clock when daily meetings go on for too long. Do work. Do work. Rush back home at 5. Btw, 'rushing' takes approximately one hour. At home, walk through house in a blur and do activities which will later be forgotten due to temporary memory loss from exhaustion. Sleep at 11.30pm. I don't know how I manage, but I'll regret the morning after when obviously I'm sleep-deprived.

From all this, my hamsters suffer. Because I can't deal with another responsibility such as cleaning hamster farm & poo.

I'm just kidding, they get plenty of love. And when I'm too tired to monitor them roaming in their cute running ball, I let them free in my room, where they chew on my closet. And have more babies. I have alot to thank my hamsters.

On weekends, I prefer to take up space on the couch or stuck to the good ol computer chair and spend hours seeing how people live their lives. I know my days sound bleak, but it isn't, really.

I just didn't mention that on weekend nights, I'll be dragged off to another family soiree (<-- I like this word, swaa ray). We gossip, and laugh mad dogly and eat to our hearts content. At the end of the night, I can't even sleep.

Perangai semua orang baru balik masjid

One more thing that I didn't mention is that since my mom is a full-time homemaker, she'll be gearing up for a shopping trip on the weekends. And for those who don't know me, I respond to the word 'shopping' like a guy responds to the Pussycat Dolls. I don't have to explain myself here right?

Then there are other things such as home cooked food, comfy bed, comfy floor(in college we have cement as floors), Astro on standby, and of course 24 hours of fully functional internet connection. Plus, I've got time to indulge in my reading sessions whereby I've bought 11 fiction books in 2 months and read 7.

Sure, working may be draggy sometimes, but that's what's happened when you fall into a routine. And I know exactly what I need:
